Jannelieke Schmidt (Young Dramatic Soprano)

Together with the North Netherlands Orchestra (NNO) and tenor Felipe Gallegos, Young Dramatic Soprano Jannelieke Schmidt will perform at the special opera concert this afternoon. She has been singing all her life: “When I was little I wanted to be Carmen because I thought she was tough and strong and she did what she wanted.” Jannelieke studied at the Royal Conservatory and has been working ever since as an opera and classical singer. She is an ardent supporter of opera for everyone and always tries to make it at the same time both high-quality and accessible: to introduce as many people as possible to compelling music; with all those human emotions and especially the fun.

Are you looking forward to the concert?

I’m really looking forward to singing with Felipe (tenor). We recently met for the first time over a cup of coffee on the Grote Markt in The Hague. I had a coffee, he had a ginger smoothie. I’m really looking forward to the scenes from La Boheme by Puccini. I must admit I still cry a lot when I rehearse that. We have a very varied programme so I am also looking forward to the mental challenge. From one style to another. And then diving into yet another role. All that together with Felipe and the NNO, what a gift!”

Your most beautiful concert?

“One of my coolest roles so far was Amelia in un Ballo in Maschera for Opera Zuid in 2018. An epic company, really nice colleagues and brilliant and above all wonderful music. It was like CityProms outside, in a big square with thousands of people. What a party! Actually all opera projects and concerts are a big party: very small and intimate in Concordia Enschede, for example, or huge with a view of the Pyrenees on a mountain in France. Opera has allowed me to see and experience so much. But come on. I want a lot more!”

After CityProms

“At the end of October I will be playing the Coco Collective in Heerhugowaard with my ensemble and at the International Song Festival Zeist. In November we have a period with the performance “Just Press Play” in which I play with ensemble But What About. (We also play at City Proms on Sunday! Come by!) Other dates and times are still up in the air as-we-speak 🙂 but if you can’t get enough of me, check my website and maybe I’ll sing or play soon with one of my ensembles right in front of your door!”
