Marine Band

The closing concert with The Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy promises to be a spectacle with no less than three world premieres. Guest programmer Johan de Meij is, as composer and arranger, central to this concert. He wrote the overture ROTTERDAM 1945 for the 75th anniversary of the Marine Band, and the concerto grosso Un Moment Dado for reed quintet Calefax. The concert will be concluded with a new adaptation of the thrilling ballet Romeo & Juliet by Sergei Prokofieff.

Biography

As a military orchestra, Marinierskapel musically represents the Royal House and the Dutch Armed Forces. This is the main task of the orchestra. Examples include the supervision of military and state ceremonials and performances for veterans: such as the annual Veterans Days, Prinsjesdag, the National Tattoo and the Princess of Orange Concert.

In its more than 75 years’ existence, the orchestra has often shown itself ’As wide as the world stretches’, as encapsulated in the motto of the Marine Corps. Conservatories also like to call on the high-quality artistic and technical skills of the professional musicians during masterclasses and exams.
