The now 27-year-old Uzbek pianist Behzod Abduraimov internationally broke through at a young age. During the opening concert of CityProms, he will replace the French cellist Gautier Capuçon who had to cancel due to a shoulder injury. With the North Netherlands Orchestra, led by Per-Otto Johansson, Behzod Abduraimov will open the festival with the second piano concerto by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov.

Remarkable control and his silky pianissimo

Abduraimov makes big impressions with his responsive and dynamic playing, his remarkable control and his silky pianissimo. Ever since he won the London International Piano contest, his musical career has been taking off. He now works with worlds most famous orchestras. “My life as a concert musician opens a lot of doors. There are still a lot of orchestras, concert halls and musicians I haven’t worked with and even is the piano repertoire is infinite, it is very important to me to continue to expand my work.”

Exciting and moving

Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto is one of his most famous pieces. This is the piece that made the composer famous. Playing Rachmaninov’s music is a big inspiration to Abduraimov: “Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto is very romantic and one of the most favourite piano concertos ever. The lyrical depth, expressiveness and perfect structure make it very exciting and moving.”

‘Classical music is for everyone’

Abduraimov is looking forward to his performance at CityProms: “We all experience emotions when we listen to music. Classical music is for everyone, whether you have a musical background or not. Events like CityProms are unique opportunities to reach a broad audience due to their easy accessibility.” He advises young people who aspire a musical career to continue improving yourself. “You should always be prepared to learn something and you have to remember how privileged we are that we are able to perform such wonderful music.”
